Job Description

An industrial electrician works in a factory or manufacturing setting on the power supply and electrical components of manufacturing equipment.

Meanwhile, a commercial electrician provides electrical installation, maintenance, and repair for commercial buildings such as offices and retail centres.

Requirement To Work As An Industrial Electrician In Ontario

  1. Completion of secondary school is usually required.
  2. Completion of a four- or five-year industrial electrician apprenticeship program or a combination of over five years of work experience in the trade and some high school, college, or industry courses in industrial electrical equipment is usually required to be eligible for trade certification.
  3. Trade certification for industrial electricians is compulsory in Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Manitoba and available but voluntary, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, British Columbia, and the Yukon.
  4. Additional construction electrician certification may be required for industrial electricians when the employers are not owners of the industrial electrical equipment.
  5. Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualifying industrial electricians upon successfully completing the interprovincial Red Seal examination.

Job Description (Industrial Electrician)

As an industrial electrician, you will be reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor and performing preventive maintenance procedures to minimize downtime and maintenance costs and manage equipment efficiencies.

You will also repair, install and test the equipment (Transformers, regulators, motors, generators, and electrical control system).

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and regulatory policies and practices ensuring safe, efficient, and consistent operation and maintenance of equipment and processes.
  2. Understand and perform safety responsibilities such as hazard identification, equipment lockout, and emergency response
  3. Perform daily checks (continuity, current, voltage, and resistance) and diagnostics on equipment Repair, install and test the equipment (Transformers, regulators, motors, generators, electrical control system)
  4. Design control panels and install circuit power distribution
  5. Interpret the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code and ensure compliance
  6. Perform preventive maintenance procedures to minimize downtime and maintenance costs, and manage equipment efficiencies
  7. Perform downtime repair work; troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions, identify opportunities for optimization
  8. The program troubleshoots, maintains and repairs industrial equipment and automation, including PLCs, HMI, frequency drives, and other related devices
  9. Ensure that all work completed meets regulatory guidelines manufacturers’ specifications and internal maintenance procedures
  10. Maintain proper documentation, including logs, maintenance records, safety, and environment reports
  11. Planned, designed, purchased, installed and tested new branch control circuits and maintained existing systems and equipment.
  12. Able to work rotating shifts
  13. Able to support extended hours as required
  14. The ability to lift up to 50lbs and work at heights
  15. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Industrial Electrician 442A
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Arc Flash Training is an asset
  • Demonstrated working knowledge with hand tools, applicable software (PLCs)
  • Mechanical Aptitude
  • Previous experience in using computer software applications to maintain operations
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Prior experience maintaining and troubleshooting industrial equipment, robotics, and PLC-controlled machinery
  • Knowledge and experience in reading electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical schematics
  • Demonstrated experience with transformers, switch gears, conveyors, pumpVFD’sD’s, fire alarm panels, HVAC, lighting panels, instrumentation calibration, and troubleshooting relay logic
