 University Credit Hours Description

A credit hour is the unit of measurement used to indicate the amount of instructional and learning time required to achieve the student learning outcomes of a college-level course. 

A semester credit hour (SCH) is the amount of credit a student earns for the successful completion of one contact hour and two preparation hours per week for a semester. One semester hour equals 15-16 contact hours per semester, regardless of the duration of the course.

Basically, for a one-semester credit hour course, you should invest one contact hour in class and two additional preparation hours each week that take place out-of-class. These can represent homework, fieldwork, or practical courses.

Khalifa University Credit Course

The Khalifa University credit course will be specified below into two different categories, and they include;

1. Undergraduate Credit Hours

For university students, the applicant must maintain a CGPA of a minimum of 3.2 and a minimum of 30 credit hours completed.

The number of credits you need to graduate depends on how long the overall program duration is. Each semester awards a certain number of credits, so if you multiply the number of semesters you need to study with the credits per semester, that’s how many overall credits you’ll need.

Normal full-time degrees require 15 credit hours per semester, so 30 credit hours per year.

If your Bachelor’s degree takes three years to graduate, you’ll need 90 credit hours total.

2. Graduate Credit Hours

Graduate Program – Modes Of Study

Modes of Study – Students can be admitted full-time or part-time, depending on the program of study.

Full-time: Students are required to register for 3-4 courses each semester (9-12 credit hours or equivalent).

Part-time: Students are required to register for two courses each semester (6 credit hours or equivalent).

Enrollment in credits below/above these standard limits for full- or part-time students requires advance written approval.

Employers are encouraged to allow part-time students to attend the University at least one day per week. This is particularly important during the research/project part of the program, as students are required to attend weekly meetings with their supervisors.

Registration during the Summer Term is limited to a maximum of 2 courses (6 credit hours or equivalent).

Khalifa Standing Credit Award

Khalifa University may award advanced standing credit for certain academic work completed prior to enrollment at the University.

This includes sufficiently high scores on some national/international secondary school examinations such as the College Board Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Advance “A” Level GCE (General Certificate of Education).

This may make it possible for a student to complete the Bachelor’s degree in less than the normal duration or take other courses. Advanced Standing Credit may only be granted after the student has been fully admitted as a freshman to Khalifa University.

All students who would like to be considered for advanced standing credit must complete the Advanced Standing Credit Evaluation form at the Office of Admissions and provide either the original score certificate or an official copy from the appropriate examining agency. Each student will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

All students must submit their request for advanced standing credit evaluations within the first semester of their freshman year at Khalifa University. Credits earned through “Advanced Standing” are considered “transfer credits” (non-residence credits) for degree requirement purposes.
