THE POST – Lecturer in Commercial Music

The Arts and Media Division of the School of Business and Cultural Industries seeks to recruit a permanent Lecturer in Music to work across their BA Hons Commercial Music and MA Music (Songwriting/Production/Industries) programs and within their dynamic practice-focused research environment.

UWS is seeking applicants who are committed to the study and practice of popular Music in a wide range of scholarly areas, which may include:

  • Songwriting
  • Composition
  • Audio Production
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Performance
  • Music in the community
  • Music and gender
  • Popular music pedagogy

UWS is particularly interested in applications from those with production or audio technology expertise and/or research interest but is open to applicants with all areas of expertise.

You will have ideas about developing exciting and inclusive learning experiences for students in some or all of these areas and plans to establish a high-quality research profile that is appropriate for your level of experience.

You will work within a scholarly community and will be supported in this work, which might involve undertaking pedagogical training, developing grant & fellowship applications, and working towards an international research profile through high-quality research publications.

The music team and the wider academic community are at the forefront of pioneering cultural research, much of which is practice-based, in media ethnography, community participation, popular music studies, cultural heritage, (social) entrepreneurialism, sustainability, and issues relating to equality, amongst other things.

The teaching focuses on three key strands:

  • Creativity (songwriting/audio production/performance)
  • Entrepreneurialism
  • Academic/critical practice

You will have experience in teaching, working, and/or researching across these areas and be ready to work collaboratively within an enthusiastic team to contribute to furthering these areas.

The successful candidate should have/be:

  1. Relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent
  2. Significant creative industry experience
  3. PhD level qualification (or be working towards one)
  4. Creative practice experience
  5. Teaching interests in some or all of the following areas:
  6. Songwriting/composition
  7. Audio Production
  8. Entrepreneurship
  9. Performance
  10. Music in the community
  11. Music and gender
  12. Popular music pedagogy
  13. The ability to lead, write and coordinate modules and develop research projects
  14. Practical experience gained within the creative industries and a network of industry contacts
  15. A track record of research publications (in practice-based or text-based forms) and/or research funding success
  16. OR creative practice / industries-based publications and/or arts and creative funding success.
  17. Experience in hybrid delivery of learning and teaching and in use of authentic/real-world assessment approaches
  18. Commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and supporting an outstanding student experience
  19. Demonstrable commitment to advancing issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion in the creative industries and/or education

This post will primarily be based at the modern, greenfield Ayr campus with its extensive studio facilities. They also focus on hybrid teaching delivery and working methods, which include many opportunities for off-campus & online working and opportunities for activities at their other campus locations.
