Scholarships
Scholarships are merit-based and recognize exceptional talent/promise or academic excellence as defined by:
- A minimum grade of 80% for students entering secondary school; or
- A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 7.5; or
- A minimum A average for graduate studies; or
- When an award evaluates students’ marks compared to their peers, top academic performance.
In some instances, scholarships may also include non-academic criteria such as financial need and residency. All York scholarships appear on a student’s transcript.
Awards
Awards combine academic criteria (minimum grade of 70% for students entering from secondary school, undergraduate grade point average of 6.0, or graduate average of B) and non-academic criteria such as community service, leadership, and financial need. Awards are also reflected on a student’s transcript.
Bursaries
Bursaries are primarily designed to assist students with financial needs. Students must be in good academic standing to be considered for bursary assistance (minimum undergraduate grade point average of 4.0). For privacy reasons, bursaries do not appear on a student’s transcript or in the convocation program.

The Emergency Bursary is a form of minimal assistance designated for international undergraduate students experiencing unexpected or emergency financial needs due to unforeseen circumstances.
However, knowing that this emergency bursary is insufficient to cover tuition fee payments is essential.
In this Emergency Bursary, you will have to submit an international student emergency bursary application Form before the deadline, and after York has reviewed your application, you will be notified of the decision. Any funds received will be applied to your student account at York University.
4. Undergraduate Student Bursary
York University offers undergraduate student bursary to international students who demonstrate financial need.
The purpose of the Undergraduate Bursary Program is to supplement, not replace, a student’s primary funding sources, such as education savings, employment income, and parental/spousal support.
Therefore, it will not be sufficient to cover tuition fee payments if selected to receive a bursary but will help cover some of it.
Eligible students must:
- You must have international student status (studying at York on a valid Study Permit and paying international fees)
- Registered and pursuing an undergraduate degree at the time of application
- Good academic standing
- Enrolled in courses at the time of application
