The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the department) seeks talented and motivated individuals to fill multiple Assistant Secretary roles reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

1. Assistant Secretary – Financial Service and Transformation Branch (FSB) oversees the work of the Financial Operations, Travel, and Credit Cards; Financial Systems and Finance Training and Practice Management Sections. The role is also responsible for leading a multi-year, ICT-enabled finance transformation program.

2. Assistant Secretary – Budget and Policy Branch (BGB) manages DFAT’s external budgets, Departmental Procurement and Grants Sections, and Policy.

3. Assistant Secretary – Financial Management Branch (FMB) leads the department’s management accounting, financial reporting, capital and assets management, and expenditure review management. FMB also manages the departmental internal budget allocations and reporting.

Key duties

The essential duties of all positions include:

  1. Deliver new capability and ongoing systems support for the department’s finance functions
  2. Deliver operational outcomes and continuous improvements in financial operations
  3. Lead finance reform programs and business process improvement
  4. Formulate, implement, and interpret policies for Ministers and the Senior Executive relating to the department’s budget and financial operations
  5. Consult, negotiate, and liaise with internal stakeholders and other government agencies
  6. Chair inter-departmental and inter-governmental meetings, appear before parliamentary committees, and represent the department at conferences/meetings.
