The Position
The Cytology Lab assistant prepares and processes all cytology samples received. The assistant must be prepared for accession cases, perform grossing, know all procedures involving cytology processing and document pertinent quality control information from the area.
Responsibilities
- Receive, accession and label pathology and clinical specimens into the Laboratory Information System.
- Apply cytopreparation methods to process cytology specimens.
- Separate aliquots for molecular testing from cytology samples.
- Operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Perform routine preventive or corrective maintenance.
- Utilize and maintain cytological stains, reagents, and chemicals, including their preparation, storage, and correct disposal.
- Maintain area well-stocked and request necessary laboratory supplies.
- Report patient safety issues and specimen deficiencies.
- Review and upkeep QC and maintenance logs
- Store and dispose of hazardous wastes using safety procedures.
- Implement the SOP protocols daily.
- Always wear personal protective equipment.
- Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner with minimal supervision.
Requirements and Skills
- High school graduate
- Laboratory training/experience desirable
- Bilingual
- High work ethic, accountability, and reliability by prioritizing patient care while treating all staff with curtesy and professionalism.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Observe the safety and hygiene measures set up by the Company.
- Flexible and adaptable; readily adapts to change, systems or methods.
- A team player with a helpful attitude.

- Not engage in improper or immoral behavior that may affect the best interests of the Company.
Working Conditions/ Physical Activity:
- The employee often must stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with arms.
- The employee must occasionally sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- The employee must be able to lift/move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
- Visual abilities needed include close vision, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
