The University of Otago has three examination periods each year.

The 2024 examination periods dates are as follows:

  • Summer School: 19–24 February 2024 (inclusive)
  • Semester 1: 8–22 June 2024 (inclusive)
  • Semester 2: 19 October–12 November 2024 (inclusive)

The 2024 examination periods dates are as follows:

  • Summer School: 18–23 February 2024 (inclusive)
  • Semester 1: 7–21 June 2024 (inclusive)
  • Semester 2: 18 October–11 November 2024 (inclusive)

Timetabling In University of Otago

Because of the flexibility of courses of study at Otago, examination timetabling cannot begin until after the last day to delete papers for that teaching period. Therefore, the anticipated dates for the release of examination timetable dates and times (published below) are:

  • Summer School: late January
  • Semester 1: mid-late April
  • Semester 2: mid-late August

Once the timetable has been finalized, each student’s examination information will be displayed in the Timetable section of their eVision portal. Per the University of Otago Examination and Assessment Regulations, candidates are expected to sit their final examinations as scheduled.

The main examination center is Dunedin. In the case of Extramural or Distance Learning candidates, the examination center is a University-nominated examination venue near their standard study location.

Otago Exam Result

Final results for papers can be viewed in the Examinations and Results section of the student eVision portal as soon as they become available each teaching period. Initially, “Unconfirmed” will be shown alongside them. Once “Unconfirmed” is no longer showing, results are official. The University of Otago uses the following scale to convert numerical marks into grades:

80-84 A-
75-79 B+
70-74 B
65-69 B-
60-64 C+
55-59 C
50-54 C-
40-49 Fail D
Below 40 Fail E

Pre-examination checklist

  • Check and double-check your eVision portal for the date and time of your examinations, and make sure you know where to go for all your studies.
  • Familiarise yourself with the Examination Rules.
  • Make sure you have an approved photo ID – your Otago Student ID is preferred; however, you may use a current passport or driver’s license.
  • Check with the course coordinators regarding the calculator provisions for your examinations; if only approved calculators are permitted, ensure that you have access to one for the review (s) concerned.

Important Information(What to Expect)

Once the timetable has been finalized, each student’s examination information will be displayed in the Timetable section of their eVision portal. Per the University of Otago Examination and Assessment Regulations, candidates are expected to sit their final examinations as scheduled. A Variation to the Regulations may be granted in exceptional circumstances, clearly beyond the candidate’s control and known about in advance.

The standard start times for University of Otago examinations are 9:30 am, 2:30 pm, and 6:30 pm (please note that the timetable uses 24-hour time), and most reviews are two or three hours long. Candidates are admitted into an examination room five minutes before the start time. There is no provision for a separate reading time during the University of Otago final examinations.

Examinations are held in rooms across the Dunedin campus and, in the case of Distance Learning students, venues in New Zealand and overseas. All candidates must read the Examination Rules before examinations.
